Which system is right for your home?

Two questions decide it: do you want better drinking water at the kitchen tap, or treated water at every tap in the house — and how big is your home?

FitsStandard 10" systems suit typical UK mains flow — adequate for an average home up to 4 bedrooms (UK guidance: 15–30 L/min peak demand for 3–4 beds). Homes with 3+ bathrooms or high simultaneous use should ask us about higher-flow options.

Tip: the two work together — a whole-house system protects your pipes, boiler and appliances, while an under-sink system gives the kitchen tap the highest-grade drinking water. Many households run one of each.

Installation guides

Straight from the owner's manuals — every system installs on the cold line under your sink, no plumber required. Always use the supplied PTFE (plumber) tape on threaded connections for a watertight seal.

HP99 — Direct Connect

  1. Connect the hoses: attach the inlet hose (with pressure regulator) to the supply end of the system.
  2. Connect the water supply (cold water only): shut off the supply → remove the original faucet hose → connect the inlet hose to the valve → connect the outlet hose to the existing faucet hose → turn the cold-water valve back on.
  3. Check for leaks & flush: inspect every joint, then flush the filters before first use — rinse new cartridges with ~10 litres of water for best performance.
In the box: system with SED + CB1 + CB2 cartridges installed, 2 braided stainless hoses, pressure regulator, fixings pack, PTFE tape, owner's manual.

HK99 — Under-Sink Cartridge

  1. Mount the system (onto a wooden plate or cabinet wall): unscrew the cartridge, fix the filter head with the provided screws, screw the cartridge back in. Leave at least 2" clearance below for twist-out replacement.
  2. Connect the hoses to the filter system — inlet hose to the supply end.
  3. Connect the water supply (cold only): shut off supply → remove original hose → connect inlet hose → reconnect the faucet hose → turn on the valve.
  4. Check for leaks and flush the system for 15 minutes before use.
In the box: filter head + HKF cartridge, inlet & outlet hoses, PTFE tape, mounting screws, manual.

SBB10 — Direct Flow

  1. Connect the hoses: inlet hose to the supply end of the system.
  2. Connect the water supply (cold only): shut off supply → remove the original hose → connect the inlet hose → connect the original faucet hose to the system's male thread → turn on the cold-water valve.
  3. Check for leaks & flush for at least 5 minutes before use (15 minutes on first install).
In the box: housing with cartridge, metal wall bracket, housing spanner, braided hoses, silicone compound, PTFE tape, fixings, manual. Seat the O-ring properly in the sump groove for a watertight seal.

3S-10BB — Premium 3-Stage

  1. Wall-mount the bracket with the housings attached.
  2. Connect to the cold supply line (1" ports) with the supplied fittings.
  3. Check for leaks and flush before use.
In the box: three-housing system on black steel wall bracket, 2 housing spanners, wall fixings. Printed manual being finalised with the factory.

Before you install — all systems

  • Inspect the box: check all components against the manual's Product Introduction section. If anything is cracked or broken, do not install — contact us for an exchange.
  • Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection.
  • Cold water only. Protect the filter from freezing — freezing can crack the housing and cause leaks.
  • Keep small parts out of reach of children under 3 during installation.
  • Installation must comply with applicable local water regulations. Flush the system before first use.

How hard is your water?

Hardness is the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in your water, measured in mg/L of calcium carbonate. It's harmless to drink — but it's what furs up your kettle, scales your boiler and shortens appliance life. Most of England is in the hard-to-very-hard bands.

Classificationmg/L CaCO₃
Soft0–50
Moderately soft51–100
Slightly hard101–150
Moderately hard151–200
Hard201–300
Very hard300+

Check your area — official supplier lookups

Every UK water company publishes hardness data for its supply zones. Find yours:

In a hard water area?

  • 151–300+ mg/L: the 3S-10BB Premium 3-Stage is built for you — its Stage 2 multi-media includes antiscale treatment and Stage 3 uses ion-exchange resin with silicon-phosphorus to prevent limescale and soften water. Most whole-house filters don't treat scale at all — ours does, in the box.
  • Any hardness: chlorine, taste and lead don't follow hardness — an under-sink system (HP99 or HK99) upgrades your drinking water wherever you live.
  • Unsure? Check your supplier's lookup above, then use our comparison guide.

Questions, delivery & returns

The things customers ask most — and the practical stuff.

Can I install it myself, or do I need a plumber?

All four systems are designed for DIY installation on the cold line with the supplied hoses, PTFE tape and fittings — see the step-by-step guides above. If you're not confident cutting into your mains for the whole-house systems, any plumber can fit one in under an hour.

How do I know which replacement filter I need?

Use the Filter Finder above — pick your system and it lists the exact cartridges and when to change them. Each cartridge also has an install-date box on the label so you can write down when it went in.

Will your filters fit systems from other brands?

GAF10, Filter 1, Filter 2 and Filter 3 use standard 10" formats that fit most housings of the same size. SED, CB1, CB2 and HKF are dedicated twist-fit cartridges for Happy H2O systems.

What water pressure do I need?

Under-sink systems operate between 20–80 psi (1.4–5.5 bar) — normal UK mains. The SBB10 housing is rated to 125 psi; if your supply can exceed 115 psi, fit a pressure regulator first.

Are your products certified?

Our carbon media is NSF/ANSI 42 & 61 certified (Jacobi AquaSorb), the HP99's lead-removal media is IAPMO-tested to NSF/ANSI 53 (up to 98.88% reduction), and our push-fit fittings hold WRAS approval No. 260402039 and French ACS. Full details in the Certifications section.
